All educational activities at Riverview WSSE are designed for K-6 students (currently K-4; K-6 by Fall of 2008) around the Success For All curriculum in reading, and Everyday Math.
This program provides an integrated approach to education that balances children's learning experiences with their stage of development. Students are grouped according to their reading level for a 90-minute reading period each day. Teachers focus on helping students understand what they read while building skills in phonics, language and vocabulary.
The Project for Academic Excellence is integrated throughout the instructional day. All grade levels are involved in Writers Workshop. There is a 60-minute period for teaching Everyday Math.
The Dual Immersion program is currently K-2 and will become K-3 fall of 2007. English-dominant and Spanish-dominant speakers enrolled in the Dual Immersion classroom will exit sixth grade fluent in both languages.
Special Features:
- Spanish/English Dual Immersion Program: English and Spanish speaking students will be fluent in both languages by the end of sixth grade.
- Emphasis on Academics: 90 minutes of reading: 60 minutes of Math; Project for Academic Excellence for Writing.
- Performing Arts: Grade level performances celebrating multicultural activities using music and dance; choir performances tour the city.
- Community Partnerships: Boys/Girls Club of America; Neighborhood House School First; Common Bond AmeriCorp Multicultural Communities in Action; Building Blocks; Urban Teacher Education Partnership.
- Distinctive Features: All Day Kindergarten; Bilingual staff; small diverse student population; uniforms.
- School-wide social skills development: Riverview School is committed to providing a safe and respectful learning environment through the use of a school-wide social skills curriculum, Getting Along Together.
- After school opportunities: ALC Program for grades 2-5; Choir; Hmong Dance classes; Mexican Folklorico Dance Classes; Chess Club.
- Coffee with the Principal is advertised quarterly
