Phalen Lake Hmong Studies is an official Core Knowledge school committed to serving a diverse student population. Building on the success of our nationally recognized Hmong Culture and Language Enrichment Program, Phalen Lake is the first Hmong Studies Magnet School in the Saint Paul Public Schools district. With the addition of regional busing, we are now be able to offer our programming to all families on the east side of St. Paul.
Teachers have received extensive training on research-based instructional practices and tailor instruction to the needs of each student. The Core Knowledge Program offers multiple ways for students to learn by blending history, geography, science and the arts. Through the topics in this rigorous curriculum, students learn about the many cultures of the world, from ancient civilizations through the cultural diversity represented here at Phalen Lake and the greater St. Paul community.
By integrating our Hmong Studies curriculum with our existing Core Knowledge curriculum, students explore the culture, language, history, traditions, literature and art of the Hmong people. In addition, students interested in becoming proficient in reading and writing in Hmong will be given the opportunity to participate in Hmong Literacy classes.
Phalen Lake's partnership with the East Side Arts Council provides a culturally diverse group of guest artists to further enrich Core Knowledge and Hmong Studies topics. Additional resources and tutors are provided by community partnerships including the Minnesota Humanities Center, 3M, University of Minnesota, and Hill Murray High School. Parents are valued as partners and serve in leadership roles.
