Located on the East Side of Saint Paul, Hayden Heights Elementary School brings together the best of a neighborhood school and a rigorous academic program that meets the individual needs of each student. A full-time librarian oversees a large collection of books and an impressive number of volunteers read with students weekly.
Teaching specialists in science, computer, and vocal music round out a program rich with language arts and opportunities for all students to enhance learning beyond the classroom. As a staff we are in the beginning stages of exploring a schoolwide instructional focus to energize our learning.
We are awaiting a new look on the outside of the building with a summer construction project that will add a new entry way and office area. The focus of this project is to make the traffic patterns safe for all and to create a welcoming environment. There will also be a new look to the inside of the building with the addition of white boards in all classrooms.
Hayden Heights students are active within our community. The Hmong Dance, Recorder Ensemble, and Music Ensemble are three active groups that meet after school and often perform together. They have performed at the National Gifted Education Conference in Minneapolis, Town Square and St. Paul Academy School.
Our second grade artists, with the help of the teacher and student teacher, created hand-felted mermaids to exhibit in the St. Paul Art Walk. They also included a class poem about the felted characters.
Special Highlights:
- The instructional focus is centered on Reader's Workshop, Writer's Workshop, and Everyday Math. Responsive Classroom is utilized school wide.
- Hayden Heights students earned the Superintendents Academic Improvement Award; a big part of our success was a significant jump in math scores.
- Hayden Heights sponsored five DestiNation Imagination teams ranging in grade level from Kindergarten - fifth grade.
- Two Hayden Heights students who play qeej were invited to play at the Ordway's World Party connected to the Honors Concert.
