4-year-old Programs
Saint Paul Public Schools recognizes the benefits of early childhood education. Many schools have programs for 4-year-olds to help them prepare for success in kindergarten. Children who are 4 years old by September 1, 2008, are eligible to attend a program in fall 2008. Most programs for 4-year-olds have half-day classes, five days a week.

To enroll a child in a program for 4-year-olds, an application must be completed.  The application deadline for 4-year-old programs is March 7, 2008. Please be sure to complete the entire application.  Choose only a school listed on this page. Check the preferences to make sure you are eligible. If you have questions about a program at a specific school, please call the school. If you have general questions about the program, transportation availability or the application process, call the Student Placement Center’s Elementary Office at (651) 632-3760.

Early Childhood Screening
Early Childhood Screening should be scheduled for children between the ages of 3 and 5 years old. The screening is required by state law for all kindergarteners and is recommended for 4-year-old kindergarten students before starting school. This screening includes a review of immunization and health information, and screening of vision, hearing, height, weight, speech and development.  The school district offers this screening at no cost to families. This screening can also be arranged with the child's doctor or health clinic. Screening is recommended for children when they are between 3 and 4 years old for early identification of any concerns that may interfere with learning.

For a screening appointment, healthcare provider checklist, or information call the Early Childhood Screening Office at (651) 632-3746.
