  • A Resource For All Your Questions

As you consider elementary school options for your child, we want you to know about the  Saint Paul Public Schools Student Placement Center, a one-stop information resource for parents. Whether a student is entering kindergarten, moving into the district, or changing schools, the Student Placement Center provides year-round services to help parents explore and select a school or program for their child. The staff also provides excellent service to non-English speaking students and parents.

The number is (651) 632-3760 and appears at the bottom of each page in this section.

What are Magnet and Citywide Option Elementary Schools?

Elementary magnet and citywide option schools offer a particular program focus in addition to the basic curriculum that all schools offer. Magnet and citywide option schools draw students from all parts of the city and are part of the school district’s voluntary desegregation efforts.  Transportation is usually provided to students who live more than a mile walking distance from the school. Families must apply, and the child must be accepted to a magnet or citywide option school before families can enroll their child.

NOTE: An application is required for all magnet and citywide option schools.

    What are Neighborhood Elementary Schools?

Neighborhood schools are available to students based on their home addresses. Students who attend neighborhood schools live within the boundaries (attendance area) for that school or are reassigned from magnet school attendance areas.

If you would like your child to attend your neighborhood school, please call that school directly. Students not currently enrolled (2007-2008) who will be in grades 1-6, please contact the Student Placement Center at (651) 632-3701 or (651) 632-3702 to schedule an intake appointment.

No application is required for Neighborhood Elementary Schools.

What is a Neighborhood Reassignment School?

Elementary Reassignment Schools are neighborhood schools. If a household is assigned to a magnet school as its attendance area school, a student must apply to that school if he or she wants to attend. If a family does not wish the child to attend that school, or the child is not accepted to the magnet or citywide option school of the family’s choice, the child is reassigned to a neighborhood school. To find out your reassignment school options, call the Student Placement Center. For more information, call (651)632-3760.

    What are Day Care Transfers?

Day care transfer is an option for families who want their child to attend a neighborhood school near their day care provider in Saint Paul rather than near their home. Parents who want their child to attend a magnet/citywide option school near their day care must apply to the school, but are not guaranteed a spot. Day care transfers are issued for neighborhood schools only. In order to receive a day care transfer, space must be available and the transfer must comply with district and state policies. Day care transfers are valid only for the school year in which they are issued. Day care transfers are not guaranteed, and there is a possibility that transportation will not be provided by the school district. For more information, call (651) 632-3760.

    What is a Elementary Transfer?

A elementary Transfer is approved for elementary students who would like to attend a neighborhood school outside of their attendance area, as long as there is space available and the transfer complies with school districtand state policies. Transportation is usually not provided. For more information, call (651) 632-3760.

    What about Kindergarten?

If you have a child who will be starting kindergarten or 4-year-old kindergarten, please call the Student Placement Center at (651) 632-3701 or (651) 632-3760 for more information.
