The mission of Benjamin E. Mays Magnet School is: "Through rigorous intercultural and interdisciplinary studies, students will be empowered with the communication and leadership skills necessary to become productive global citizens who are inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring." We have high expectations, a challenging curriculum, and innovative programs for our students.
We provide continuous feedback to students and their families about academic expectations and student progress. Our school is a longtime practitioner of Reader's and Writer's Workshop, which is aligned with the national and state standards and promotes high rigor in the area of literacy. All of our teachers are trained in the delivery of Integrated Math, which promotes higher level thinking and problem solving skills. Benjamin E. Mays International Magnet School is happy to announce our authorization as an official Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). This authorization recognizes Mays as a "World School," which aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring students. The PYP also strives to help students develop an international perspective -- to become aware of and sensitive to the points of view of people in other parts of the world. We have two IB/PYP nights during the school year where students share their work in a selected Transdisciplinary Unit of Inquiry. We have a variety of experts in the community that work with us on specific Units of Inquiry. Our students participate in numerous off-site learning experiences relative to our Units of Inquiry.
Special Features:
- Our school offers instruction in Spanish, Science, Vocal Music, and Physical Education for students in grades K - 6. We offer band, violin, harp and chimes for students in grades 5 - 6. Students in grades 5 - 6 also have the opportunity to participate in the Mays Leadership Council.
- We have an "Everybody Wins!®" reading partnership with The Minnesota Judicial Center and US Bank. These two groups provide reading buddies for every student in grades 1 - 3. The Twin Cities Assembly of Architects works with all fourth grade students on city planning and Cretin Derham High School Seniors tutor students in grades 1 - 3 in reading and math.
- The principal organizes the "Mays Book Club" with four books annually. The four chosen books focus on some of the IB/PYP Learner Profile Attributes and Attitudes. The principal reads these books to every grade level in the school.
- School Uniforms worn daily.
- Discovery Club for before and after school care
