Secondary Schools Both middle school/junior high and senior high schools are included in this category and offer a wide variety in format and subject focus. The many secondary program options and specialties draw students from across the city and are part of the school district’s voluntary desegregation efforts. New students, or those changing schools, must apply to their schools of choice. Students are admitted to secondary schools based on applications, district guidelines and available space. Students who live within a school’s attendance area have first preference for acceptance into that school. Arlington High School has a citywide attendance area. (See page 48 for a map of attendance areas.) Once accepted to a school, students may register for the specialty programs or small learning communities offered at each secondary school. Those planning to stay at their current school next year do not need to apply, but all secondary students must register for classes. When students select a high school, it is wise to make a four-year commitment to that school. The secondary school application deadline is February 28, 2007.
Due to a large number of students expected to enroll in high school in 2007-2008, space will be limited in grades 9-12 at many schools. In order to increase the chance of securing a place for your child in a high school of their choice, parents are encouraged to indicate their attendance area school as a first or second choice on the secondary application.
